Antony Gormley

Antony Gormley creates sculptures using different medias which investigate the relationship between both the human body and spaces. One of my favorite pieces of work Gormley has produced is 'FEELING MATERIAL XXVI, 2005', I have chosen this one as I believe the use of what looks to be thick wire has a resemblance to pen on paper when looking from a distance. The abstract piece when against the white wall has a similar look to a sketch with a constant line, and shows a figure of a man. The use of the tight wire represent's the figures body and the scattered wire around the figure reminds me of confusion or distress, suggesting that Gormley at the time of creating this sculpture was having a hard time mentally so has chosen to show it physically and visually through his work. I have chosen similar piece of Gormley's work to look at as I am intrigued by the use of wire to create lines and the idea of a figure been made out of multiple shapes and medias. When moving onto my personal project I am wanting to focus upon drawing and looking at Gormley's work has inspired me to focus on the lines within the drawings with the way his sculptures create such an abstract image like drawing from a distance has shown me not everything may look how its supposed to.
