Monica Bonvicini

Bonvicini's is a sculpture, painter and installation artist and her work features industrial materials such as glass, metal and chains. Her work involves looking into the relationship between, architecture, gender, space, control, and power. Recently visiting the BALTIC I have been given the opportunity to view Bonvicini's work in person, allowing me to get a real sense of understanding of how Bonivicini has progressed throughout her career.

Light Me Black, 2009

Light Me Black is made up of 144 fluorescent lights and is inspired by the artist RENZO PIANO's reference to the Modern as "a temple of light...a building about light and lightness". The sculpture itself has been made from what would be found in an everyday office and then recreated, in an empty space which has allowed it to stand out and us to focus on the sculpture itself.

Chain Leather swing, 2009

Chain leather swing is represented in a hammock form and is made up of chains and leather tassels, Bonivini was inspired after reading into gender-related theory on architecture and is interested in stereotypes in the fields of both  architecture and gender.
