Rodney Graham 

Rodney Graham is a Canadian artist, known to be one of the most inventive and influential artists to have emerged in the last forty years. The exhibition, Thats Not Me, has been presented over both Level 3 and Level 4 at the BALTIC. Showing Graham's work from 1994 to 2017. Playing the main role within his own work, Graham casts him self as a number of characters. Such as, sound engineer, musician, painter, photographer, video-maker, actor, sculptor, producer, performer, poet, writer and historian. Graham's photographic Lightbox works, document moments in time and involve a lone Graham in the role of characters taken from history.

Dance!!!!! 2008

Made up of two painted aluminium lightboxes with transmounted chromogenic transparencies, the edition of 4, is sized at, 279.4 x 368.2 x 17.8 cm /11o x 145 x 7 in.  One of Grahams artistic fascinations is with the myth of the American West, focusing on the emblematic figure of he cowboy. Although moat of what is known about the West is based on fiction, through Hollywood films, music, myths and legends. Graham explores this in the piece Dance!!!!!, creating additional studies to the long lasting myth. Using his blank humour, the image shows a man being forced to dance salon by another man. Gun in hand, shooting bullets at his feet. Graham, at the right of the image, jumping in mid-air to avoid the bullets.

Three painted aluminium lightboxes with transmounted  chromogenic transparencies,  starring him self as his alto ego, in homage to the modernist painter Morris Louis. known for using his suburban home as a studio. Graham has created a place often associated with general architecture, and turned it into a place of artistic creativity and manufacture.
