Mark Powell

I have chosen to look into the artist Mark Powell as I am truly fascinated by his style of work, Powell reuses envelopes as a canvas for his drawings and creates the drawing using only Biro pen. The use of the recycled postcards also links in with the idea of the old faces he draws onto them as if it is telling their story, almost as though he is creating the face of the person behind the sent postcard. When looking at Powell's work not only are you getting pulled into the portrait drawing because of the detail within the shading of the Biro pen but, also the lines and wrinkles of the postcard stamps under the pen combine both, the wear and tear of the postcard and the wrinkles and lines within the elderly men and women's faces creating a realistic feel. I myself am fascinated on how Powell creates such drawings with the use of a pen but then also creates a much stronger meaning when using recycled materials.
