Karen Appelton

Karen Appelton is a painter who works with oil paints to create these unique images. I have chosen Appelton's work as I was automatically captured by the use of colour, I am wanting to begin to explore the world of colour in my own work and I believe that Appelton's work is a starting point. Admiring the advantage that oil paints have to create a textual coat when layered and dried is something I am wanting to try. Both of the pieces I have chosen to look at which I have not been able to fin the names of are very similar with the use of colour and style, Appelton has used a wide range of tones to aim towards the actual colour of the nose and mouth. The marks that Appelton has added to both of the paintings are loose as though she has allowed her paint brush to have a mind of its own, while the lines are abstract they still portray the image quite realistically. I believe Appelton's work becomes more about the lines and brush strokes that she uses within her paintings the what the image projects itself.
