Elly Smallwood

Elly Smallwood produces painting which are personal to herself  and give a visual image of how she pictures the people around her. I have chosen to look at Smallwood's work as I am fascinated with her abstract paintings of the eye and mouth. As I am looking into different medias to produce a number of images of the eye and mouth at this stage in my own project, I believe her style will be great to explore my self. I enjoy looking at Smallwood's painting as they have a range of brush stroke's, thick, thin, hard and soft, allowing Smallwood to create tone and texture within the paintings. Choosing to look at these pieces which I am unknown to there names, I believe are some of Smallwood's best pieces, the use of using just a small element of the face has been effective as it makes you question the reason of why? why has she chosen to focus on just one small section of the face?. Looking at the two eye's I have chosen I also believe they are of the same eye, only Smallwood has chosen to create the same image using two similar but different medias. With the top piece there has been the use of  what looks to be oil paints allowing the painting to be vibrant in the way the colours stand out, with the bottom eye I believe acrylic paint has been used which has allowed the paint to be added much thicker creating a textual look. Finally looking at the abstract paining of the mouth and the way Smallwood has distorted the way it appears but yet, still manage's to keep the image and idea of what it represents is excellent.
